El Greco Restaurant > Go Greek in Budapest
El Greco bears little trace of the elegance and grandeur of the neighbouring State Opera. Nevertheless, a detour to the small restaurant is worthwhile, particularly at midday when you can get stuck into a large buffet for very little.
This, however, is only true from 11:30am to 3:30pm, when the lunchtime buffet attracts a lively throng of people. And, as should be the case with a buffet, the dishes on offer are numerous. The quality, however, is somewhat uneven. The green salad, for example, is hardly a speciality of the house; nor are the pancakes stuffed with chicken likely to drive your taste buds wild. The fried aubergines, courgettes and mushrooms, on the other hand, will get even non-vegetarians excited. The Greek sausages are wonderfully succulent, the pork is done to perfection and the meals are unusually tasty considering the canteen-level prices.
This is also true of the kebab, which really does taste authentically Greek: all the more surprising given the Hungarian chef takes his recipes from a colleague. This fits with the concept of a restaurant which offers a colourful mix: the friendly waiting staff scurry attentively through the narrow room, where there are numerous tables side by side, with rustic blue and white tablecloths. On the yellow walls, there are Greek amphorae, and the furniture is a glaring ocean blue. Surprisingly, the overall effect is not as overpowering as it might sound.
In the evening the menu is brought out, with main courses from HUF 1,500 for a normal meat dish up to HUF 4,500 for lavish grill platters or shark steaks. To go with the food there is a wide choice of Greek wines, which you can also enjoy in the comfortable taverna in the cellar.
